Saturday May 18th, 2024
I am pleased to announce that Guest Instructor Sifu Wai Tang 2nd Generation Lineage Disciple, is coming to Oakland, California
for a one day I Liq Chuan Zhong Xin Dao Workshop on Saturday May 18th, 2024
Topic: The Skeleton as Your Neutral Reference
Times: 12 noon to 7pm
Location: In Motion Center
1091 Calcot Place Suite 412
Oakland CA 94606
In a Balanced Body when Flexors Flex, Extensors Extend.
"Our language calls the bony backbone the spinal column, a misleading term. A spine does not function in this way; by design, it does not and should not carry or support weight. The primary function of a balanced spine is to separate soft tissue and bony parts. It is a lattice to which Myofascial parts are attached. A tent demonstrates this difference. Ask a city man what holds a tent upright, and he answers "why the Tent Poles of course". But the woodsman knows that in a properly stretched tent it is the downward pull of the left side that upholds the right side, and it is the right side that upholds the left. The function of the Tent Pole is to ensure appropriate spatial balance of the two sides. So it is with bodies. Bones determine spatial position of the attached muscles and thereby also the efficacy of the agonist-antagonistic balance."
~ Rolfing: The Integration of Human Structures - Chapter 5 by Dr. Ida P. Rolf PhD.
This workshop will focus on teaching you the process of Body Unification and developing the “Inner force” – Nei Gung – within your body.
Nei Gung is the progressive training of your Bones, Ligaments, Tendons and Fascia.
Many students of the Martial Arts are told to relax but they are not taught in a systematic way how to relax, or what comprises true relaxation.
You have to understand your Skeleton (Structure) in order to be able to relax and create a state in which your muscles and tendons lengthen and fall back toward the center of the Skeleton.
This lengthening action needs to occur from head to toe, in long chains of power transfer - e.g., to look at one link in this chain - the biceps and brachialis lengthen and fall back toward the humerus to raise your forearm.
Only with proper degree of relaxation can your Yin and Yang muscles function optimally and flow in their correct directions with their collaborative polarities and intrinsic force vectors.
For your Yin and Yang muscles to work together in this complementary way, you have to have a clear understanding of your Skeleton as a Tensional Structure maintaining the Postural Integrity of your body.
This is the subject Sifu Wai Tang will be deeply exploring and teach you to do in a systematic step by step process.
The rotations produced from this body organization moving in a dynamic relationship with gravity will produce 3 pairs of Tangential Force Vectors (6 Energies), as well as the Forking Energy of 2 Arcs off each of these Tangential Lines.
This is part of what is termed the 'Straight Seeking the Curve'.
A harmonized flow of the Yin Yang muscles will make it possible to correctly train your Skeleton/Bone (Structure), Ligaments, Tendons, and Fascia.
In this workshop you will learn both solo and partner exercises designed to help you to discover and recognize your Skeleton (Bones and Joints Centers) as Neutral and feel the specific flows and appropriate functions of the Yin and Yang muscles.
Through solo and partner training exercises you will experience your Skeleton (Structure), a dynamic balance of your Yin Yang muscles, and the Macro-cosmic energy flow.
Usually, when we first begin training, we explore the limits of your Yin and Yang muscles to find and recognize Neutral.
However, in this workshop, we will recognize Neutral directly by accessing your Skeletal 'Bone Line' Energy, and train the flow of your Yin Yang muscles without leaving the Neutral reference of your Skeleton.
Neutral becomes the reference point from which we will adjust Yin and Yang flows through your Tissues.
In today's discussions of Internal Martial Arts training models and methods - 'Fascia' has become a popular topic of conversation and subject of seminar presentations. Practitioners are looking to anatomical references such as the 'Anatomy Trains' work of Thomas Myers and Ida Rolf's seminal work in the field "Rolfing - The Integration of Human Structures" (cited above) to provide an insightful analysis of Tendon and Fascial chaining pathways and the qualities of Elastic Force. But, the Bone-line - Periosteum (the Fascia on the surface of the Bone to which the Tendons attach) stretching - and the reference to how to precisely train the interaction of these tissues with central Bone Line Axial Rotations and spiraling engagement of your Ligaments is often overlooked. This oversight leaves the potential and value that this detailed information promised largely untapped and undeveloped. This information and these distinctions will make a significant difference in your training.
Wai is very knowledgeable about the historical development of the “Yi Jin Jing” "Muscle Tendon Change" classical training methods. Wai's background as a physicist makes his teaching simple, compelling, and fun.
Emphasis will be on developing not just your technical ability but your power of awareness and attention. The real 'Secret' of moving from your Skeleton will be clearly revealed.
Grand-master Sam Chin was speaking with me last year when he was here and he remarked
"How many Martial Artist teachers and practitioners in the world today can really move from their Bone Line with a pure Central Rotation?"... He noted "I think only a few."
Testimonials from past workshops...
"Sifu Wai's presentation on Yin and Yang muscles and their relation to the Skeletal Neutral Reference was one of the most insightful seminars I have ever participated in."
~ I Liq Chuan Instructor Lan Tran, Philadelphia PA
"Absolutely Wonderful - this is a great refinement seminar and has helped me connect and correct my Yin Yang Upper and Lower Body Pathways!"
~ I Liq Chuan Instructor and Licensed Acupuncturist Sonjue Kolstov Medford Oregon
“Wai Tang’s instruction on how to feel Yin Yang pathways offers an excellent orientation to the most basic energy flow in our bodies—and how to recognize it, distinguish it, and keep bringing our attention back to this ‘very base of origin’—the Macrocosmic Orbit. Highly recommend this session! ~ Nancy Watterson, Ph.D. ~ Zhong Xin Dao / I Liq Chuan instructor and affiliate faculty member, University of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia, PA
About I-Liq Chuan: http://www.iliqchuan.com/ I-Liq Chuan (roughly translated as ""Mind Strength Fist") is an art of cultivating consciousness based on Tai Chi and Chan (Zen) principles of non-assertion, non-resistance, the harmony of yin and yang, oneness, and the present moment. I Liq Chuan is an art which is growing rapidly worldwide with Instructors and Practitioners in 30 countries. A brilliant synthesis of Tai Chi, Hsing-I, Ba Gua, Shaolin and Hakka arts; I Liq Chuan is also a merging of Taoist and Buddhist teaching. Master Sam Chin was trained in martial arts since childhood by his father - the founder of I Liq Chuan, Grand Master Chin Lik Keong. As a system of Kung Fu, I-Liq Chuan emphasizes the development of internal power through mental attitude and awareness. The martial training develops sticking and merging abilities, circular spiral energy, Chin Na (locking), Fa Jing (projecting force), Nei Kung, Chi Kung, and most importantly, the integration of the mind's complete awareness in the present moment. I-Liq Chuan trains the ability to sense the opponent's intention through awareness and to redirect the force and use it against the opponent or incorporate the use of Fa Jing.
About Sifu Wai Tang: Wai started off in Chinese Kung Fu when he was a teenager in Hong Kong. He later began training in the Japanese Martial Art of Aikido and started the long journey of searching for the 'Secret Power' of Internal Martial Arts. This led him to years of study in Tai Ji Quan. He trained under Mr. Wu Ta-yeh of Tai Ji Quan Tutelage of Palo Alto when he was working in Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, after getting his Ph.D. in high energy Physics from Columbia University. Later he studied Bagua Zhang from Master Park Bok-Nam in Richmond, Virginia. In 2004, Wai met Grand-master Sam FS Chin in an I Liq Chuan workshop at Chuang Yen Monastery and since then became the dedicated student of I Liq Chuan. Wai has trained exclusively in I Liq Chuan directly from the gatekeeper, Grandmaster Sam FS Chin and has been a disciple of Master Sam FS Chin since 2008. Wai has cross trained in many different systems of Martial Arts so he can understand perspectives from students coming into I Liq Chuan from other styles. He can share with you invaluable contextual insights and guidance that will enhance your training experience and your ability to progress.
Since 2004, Wai has traveled extensively to train with and assist Master Chin; highlights include • San Francisco in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2014 • Malaysia in 2009 • Perth, Australia in 2009 • Moscow, Russia in 2009 • Kiev, Ukraine 2009 • Los Angles, 2011 • MACS Martial Arts Collective Society Gathering, Sacramento 2011 • Boston, 2014, • Bulgaria, 2017, • Northampton, 2019, • Paris, 2022.
Wai is currently one of the select few students around the world to hold the I Liq Chuan rank of Student Level 8, instructor level 4. Since 2011, Wai started conducting I Liq Chuan workshops in various locations: Kiev, Boston, NYC, London, Oakland (CA), Manchester (NH) - New England Martial Arts Symposium, Cherry Hill (NJ), Princeton (NJ).
